Now that I have found a new job (at a desk again) doing the same work as before (software development) I have to admit, this sucks as bad as before. The amount of sitting I am forced to do is detrimental to my body, and after a fair amount of healing, I am really noticing the pain that this desk job causes me. Obviously the attitude I once had still holds true, I don't want a desk job anymore. And again, obviously, I have no idea what else to do that would help me sustain my life. I have been working hard to try and find interests that might help me get away from a desk, but the hard part is monetizing them, obviously.

Sigh, such work involved in trying to NOT work :-)

Have you tried a standing desk? Any chance your employer would let you get one? My last employer had ones that adjusted from sitting to standing and lots of folks swore by keeping it in standing position all the time (since meetings offered plenty of sitting time already).

I get up and walk around during my day when I can - can you get a walking desk or stand some of the time? It may mean restructuring your office or cube but it would be worth it.

One of my bosses is very active (lots of triathlons) so he hates sitting down as well. He has a cushion pad that he stands on all day and he has a elevated desk that he works at. Could you consider that?

That's a great idea! My last employer did not allow for such things but my new one probably will!

Well Mrt2100, since I'm new to FatSecret and just learning the ropes of the interface and some of the member issues, I'll be foraying into somewhat unknown territory in responding to your issue. I'm not sure what "injury" you are "healing" from, so any recommendations I might suggest may or may not be applicable to your situation; for that, I apologize, but here goes....I too have a desk job in an engineering capacity and completely understand the disatisfaction that situation can present. Finding an occupation that satisfies the heart, mind, soul, & spirit while keeping a roof over your head can be challenging. I'm going to presume that you like being busy with your hands doing some type of physical activity as well as challenging your mind with software development. Have you considered doing something on a part time basis like Habitat for Humanity (HFH)? I'm sure there are other equally worthwhile organizations that have needs for someone smart and willing to perform some minor amount of physical work; it's just that HFH is one where you can really see the contribution of your efforts to the benefit of others. You might find that after a few HFH projects, you really like the activity of constructing homes or other structures and see that as something you could do part time on your own to satisfy that "get-out-of-the-office" need. Who knows...it could become your new full time gig. I think the secret for guys like us, who tend to be slightly more conservative in our financial dealings and a little more risk averse, is to gradually slip into something and see if it meets our needs before completely selling out to it. For you, it might not be HFH, but some other activity. The point is to get out there and find something you can pour your pinned up energy into while simultaneously seeking that long term occupational solution you crave. Good luck.

Perhaps different chair or sitting apparatus? I too work a desk. What kind of pain do you speak of?

@mikeandcheese - You hit the nail on the head. Obviously you understand and seemed to have experienced this also. I have been considering more active social options for a couple years now, as you suggest. Though, also as you state, I am slightly risk averse, and the routine is very addicting. I've had a couple events happen lately that have really rocked my routine and it's been quite refreshing. I will look into HFH, I certainly enjoy building things, that is a great suggestion! Thank you for your feedback.

I saw this neat lift kit you can buy for your computer. it changes your sitting position to a standing position. This gives you the option to stand at your desk instead of sitting. I have a desk job to and want to do more to get up and move!

I've seen some balance ball type office chairs that are supposed to force you to use better posture and utilize your muscles better for support, particularly abdominal muscles. Our accountant at work has back issues and just got an adjustable platform that sits on her desk and raises the computer/keyboard/mouse, and has some workspace on it too. Because it's adjustable it can also be lowered for sitting if desired. She says it's helping her a lot.
