John10251's Logboek, 15 mrt 16

I have made a personal observation about myself. Not unlike most men I have worn a few different sized shirts in my lifetime. I wore smalls as a teenager, mediums as a young adult, in my 40's I wore large sized shirts. When I got into my mid 50's, I thought I had finally arrived when I started wearing Extra Large shirts like the other guys. What I had really arrived at was obesity. I have now learned to accept my body size. Since I have been hovering around my goal weight, I know my body proportions are better and my clothes fit better. My belt does not droop towards the floor in the front as much as it used to do and I don't have to wear my belt below my gut. Part of my journey has been learning to accept myself and body image. I once read a post from a man that asked sarcastically, "Who wants to weigh 150 pounds?" Well, if it's healthier and I look better; I do...

I wonder where that sarcastic guy is now?! Next step after accepting yourself and your body image is to learn to like it :)

Bill, there is no need to apologize other than the fact that you are a good person. I didn't have a clue who made the post and you didn't have to come forward. Although I never thought it was bad spirited, I accept your apology. You are very right, it's all relative to each person's height and build. I don't think 150 pounds would look as good on a six-footer. I think a discussion about body image is important. Not everybody is going to look like Barbie or Ken just because they loss some weight. I think being healthier and more active are rewards in themselves.

I have a bodybuilding profile on a website. It's interesting to share ideas. Anyway, I'd lost close to 80 pounds and had been lifting for about 6 months when I posted my photo. Almost immediately I got a journal reply that said (in a way that only a [fellow] musclehead could put it] "Bro, do you even lift?" At first I was affronted. The guy was early 20s and had a really good physique. I'll never look as good as he did, but then I'll never have his attitude either. It was a little intimidating... and then I realized and replied after reading a couple of post he'd made, "Yeah, bro. I've lifted for all of 6 months, but I'm as determined as anyone on here to get in shape. I'm in my 50s, not my 20s, and I have just lost close to 80 pounds. Unlike you, I don't have a 'room', I own a house. Have fun in your mom's basement." I giggled for a week.
